Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Piano Aura.

General

Closing Piano Aura works just like any other app on your device!

On iPhones with Face ID (no Home button):
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle. You'll see all your open apps. Find Piano Aura and swipe it up to close it.

On iPhones with a Home button:
Double-press the Home button to see your open apps. Find Piano Aura and swipe it up to close it.

On iPads:
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause, then swipe Piano Aura up to close it. If you're using a keyboard, you can also press Command + H to go to the Home Screen.

Don't worry — your settings and recordings are saved automatically, so you won't lose anything when you close the app.

Colored note labels are a fun way to learn the piano keys! Each note gets its own color, making it easier to tell them apart at a glance.

To turn them on:

  1. Open Settings from the main screen.
  2. Find the Colored Note Labels toggle.
  3. Switch it on.

That's it! You'll see the note names on the keys light up in different colors right away. If you ever want to go back to the standard look, just toggle it off again.

This works great alongside the note label display options — you can show labels on all keys, just on the octave markers, or hide them entirely.

Piano Aura works on both iPhones and iPads!

The interface is designed to scale beautifully across all screen sizes — from standard iPhones to iPhone Pro Max models, and from 11-inch iPads to 13-inch iPads. On larger screens you'll naturally see more keys and have a more spacious playing experience.

The app requires a device running a recent version of iOS, so make sure your device is up to date for the best experience.

One thing to keep in mind: the app is landscape-only, meaning you'll need to hold your device sideways. This gives you the widest possible keyboard, just like a real piano!

Great question! Piano Aura is designed exclusively for landscape mode because it gives you the best playing experience.

Think about it — a real piano keyboard is wide and horizontal. By using landscape orientation, we can fit more keys on your screen and give you larger, easier-to-tap keys. Playing in portrait mode would mean either very tiny keys or very few keys visible at once, and neither would feel great.

Landscape mode also gives features like Play Along, the metronome, and the recording controls enough room to breathe without covering up your keyboard.

So just turn your device sideways and you're ready to play!

The app gives you three ways to display note labels on the piano keys:

  • All — Shows the note name (C, D, E, F, G, A, B) on every single key. Great for beginners who are still learning where each note is.
  • Octaves — Only shows labels at octave markers. Helpful once you know the basics and just need a quick reference point.
  • None — Hides all labels for a clean, distraction-free keyboard. Perfect when you're comfortable playing by ear or from memory.

You can switch between these in Settings at any time.

There's also an option for International Notation if your language uses a different naming system (like Do, Re, Mi instead of C, D, E). This option shows up automatically if your device language supports it.

And if you want an extra visual boost, you can combine any of these modes with Colored Note Labels to give each note its own color.

You can adjust the size of the piano keys to see more (or fewer) keys on your screen!

Head over to Settings and look for the Key Size slider. Drag the slider to the left to make the keys smaller — this lets you see more keys at once. Drag it to the right to make the keys bigger if you prefer larger keys that are easier to tap.

The change happens in real time, so you can experiment until you find the size that feels just right for you. This is especially handy if you're on an iPhone and want to see a wider range of notes, or on an iPad where you've got more screen space to play with.

You can also scroll the keyboard left and right by swiping to access different octaves.

Play Along

Play Along is an interactive music game mode where you play songs on the piano keyboard while following visual guidance on screen!

Here's how it works: note blocks fall from the top of the screen toward the piano keyboard. When a block reaches the hit line at the bottom, you tap the matching key on the keyboard. Hit the notes at the right time to score points, build streaks, and earn up to 3 stars on each song.

It's a fantastic way to:

  • Learn new songs by following the falling notes
  • Practice your timing and accuracy
  • Challenge yourself with different difficulty levels and speeds
  • Have fun with a gamified music experience

Play Along has a growing catalog of songs across different genres. Some songs are free, while others can be unlocked by watching a short video or subscribing to Premium.

Getting started with Play Along is easy and fun!

  1. Open the Play Along section from the main menu.
  2. Browse the song catalog and pick a song you'd like to play.
  3. Choose a song part to practice, or select Concert to play the full song from start to finish.
  4. Tap Start — a countdown will begin so you can get ready.
  5. Watch the falling note blocks — when they reach the hit line near the keyboard, tap the matching key!
  6. Keep playing until the song ends. You'll see your score and star rating on the results screen.

The keyboard will highlight upcoming keys so you know what's coming next. If you need to see keys in a different range, you can scroll the keyboard left or right.

After the song, you can replay the same section, move on to the next part, or share your score with friends!

Yes! When you open Play Along for the first time, an interactive tutorial will guide you through the basics.

The tutorial walks you through:

  1. Short notes — Learn how to tap keys when short note blocks reach the hit line.
  2. Long notes — Learn how to hold keys down for sustained notes (taller blocks).
  3. A gift song — As a reward for completing the tutorial, you'll receive a free song to get you started!

The tutorial plays out right on screen with real notes to practice on, so you'll get hands-on experience before jumping into the full song catalog.

If you're eager to dive in, you can skip the tutorial at any time. But we recommend completing it — especially the gift song at the end! The tutorial only appears once, so you won't be bothered by it again on future visits.

In Play Along, the falling blocks on screen represent the notes you need to play!

Each block falls from the top of the screen toward the hit line near the piano keyboard. Here's what to look for:

  • Position — The block lines up with the piano key you need to press. The keyboard also highlights the upcoming keys so you know exactly where to tap.
  • Height of the block — Taller blocks mean you need to hold the key down for longer (sustained notes). Short blocks are quick taps.
  • Timing — You want to tap the key right when the block reaches the hit line. Tapping too early, too late, or missing entirely all affect your score.

The system rates each note you play:

  • Perfect — Right on time! Maximum points.
  • Good — Close enough! Still scores well.
  • Early — You tapped a bit too soon.
  • Late — You tapped a bit too late.
  • Miss — The note passed by without being played.

Just keep your eyes on the falling blocks, follow the highlighted keys, and you'll get the hang of it in no time!

Play Along offers three difficulty levels so everyone can enjoy the experience:

Easy
Fewer notes to hit, with a more forgiving pace. Perfect for beginners or for getting familiar with a new song. You'll learn the main melody without being overwhelmed by too many notes.

Medium
More notes and a faster pace. A good step up once you're comfortable with the easy version. You'll also earn a score bonus for playing on medium difficulty!

Hard
The full arrangement with the most notes and fastest pace. This is the real challenge — it'll push your skills to the limit. Hard difficulty comes with the biggest score bonus, so high scores are up for grabs.

Tip: Try starting on Easy to learn the melody, then work your way up to Medium and Hard as you improve. Each difficulty tracks its own best score, so you can see your progress at every level.

Yes! Play Along lets you adjust the speed of the song to match your skill level.

There are 5 speed options:

  • 0.5x — Half speed. Perfect for learning a tricky section note by note.
  • 0.75x — Three-quarter speed. A nice middle ground when you know the notes but need a bit more time.
  • 1.0x — Normal speed. The song plays as intended.
  • 1.5x — One and a half speed. For when you want an extra challenge.
  • 2.0x — Double speed. The ultimate test of your skills!

You can change the speed at any time during gameplay using the speed button on screen. The notes and timing adjust automatically, so everything stays in sync.

Tip: Start at 0.5x to learn the notes, then gradually increase the speed as you get more comfortable. Before you know it, you'll be nailing it at full speed!

Every note you play in Play Along earns you points based on how accurately you hit it. Here's the breakdown:

Note Accuracy
Each note is scored individually as Perfect, Good, Early, Late, or Miss. Perfect hits earn the most points, and misses earn none.

Streaks
When you hit multiple notes in a row accurately, you build a streak. The longer your streak, the higher your score multiplier! There are 5 streak levels — the more consecutive hits, the bigger the bonus. A single miss resets your streak, so try to stay focused.

Difficulty Bonus
Playing on higher difficulty levels (Medium or Hard) gives you a score multiplier on top of your base score. So even if you don't hit every note perfectly, playing on a harder difficulty can boost your total.

Concert Bonus
Playing a song in Concert mode (the full song instead of individual parts) also applies a bonus multiplier to your score.

Star Rating
At the end of each song or part, your overall accuracy percentage determines your star rating:

  • 1 star — 0% to 33% accuracy
  • 2 stars — 34% to 66% accuracy
  • 3 stars — 67% to 100% accuracy
Your highest score for each song part is saved, so you can always come back and try to beat your best!

Songs in Play Along are divided into manageable sections to make learning easier!

Song Parts (Training Mode)
Each song is split into multiple parts — for example, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and so on. Each part covers a section of the song, so you can focus on learning one piece at a time without feeling overwhelmed.

Parts unlock in order — you need to complete Part 1 before Part 2 becomes available, and so on. This way, you gradually learn the entire song step by step.

Concert Mode (Full Song)
Once you've practiced the individual parts (or if you're feeling confident!), you can play the entire song from start to finish in Concert mode. This combines all parts into one continuous performance.

Concert mode is more challenging since the song is longer, but it also gives you a score bonus — your points are multiplied for taking on the full song at once.

Choosing What to Play
When you select a song, you'll see a carousel showing all available parts plus the Concert option. You can swipe through them, see your best score and star rating for each, and pick which one to play. Locked parts will show a lock icon until the previous part is completed.

Play Along has a set of fun achievements you can unlock while playing! These are special milestones that reward you for unique accomplishments:

  • Practice Makes Perfect — Score 100% accuracy on a song. Every single note hit perfectly!
  • Flow — Build an impressive max streak during a Concert mode performance. Keep those perfect hits going!
  • Loud and Proud — Play with your device volume turned all the way up. Let everyone hear your performance!
  • Perfect Pitch — Complete a song with your screen brightness set very low. Can you play in the dark?
  • Living on the Edge — Finish a song when your battery is critically low. Talk about dedication!
Achievements add an extra layer of fun and give you goals beyond just getting 3 stars. Some of them are tricky to get, so keep an eye out for creative ways to unlock them all!

The Play Along catalog has a mix of free and locked songs. Here's how it works:

  • Free songs — Available to everyone right away! The first song in the catalog is always free, along with other songs marked as free.
  • Locked songs — These require either watching a short video to unlock temporarily, or having a Premium subscription for full access.

Songs are locked to support ongoing development of the app and to keep adding new songs to the catalog. But don't worry — there are several ways to enjoy locked songs without committing to a subscription. Check out "How do I unlock songs without subscribing?" for more details.

Premium subscribers get instant access to every song in the catalog with no ads or waiting.

Good news — you don't need a subscription to try locked songs! Here's how:

Watch a Short Video
When you tap on a locked song, you'll see an option to watch a short video. After watching it, the song will be temporarily unlocked so you can play it. This lets you try out different songs without any cost.

Free Songs
There are always free songs available in the catalog that don't require anything to play. The first song is always free, and additional free songs are added regularly.

Subscribe for Full Access
If you find yourself wanting unlimited access to every song without watching videos, a Premium subscription unlocks the entire catalog instantly. You can subscribe from the popup that appears when you select a locked song, or through Settings > Go Premium.

This way, you can enjoy Play Along at your own pace — whether you prefer the free options, occasional video unlocks, or the full Premium experience.

Yes! You can record your Play Along sessions as a video using your device's built-in screen recording feature.

Look for the Record button in the top area of the Play Along screen. Tap it to start recording — your device will capture everything on screen, including the falling notes, your key presses, and your score. When you're done, a preview of the recording will appear.

From the preview, you can:

  • Save the video to your Photos library
  • Share it directly to social media, messaging apps, or anywhere else

It's a great way to show off your skills, track your progress, or share a fun performance with friends!

You can also share your score after finishing a song — the results screen includes a share button that lets you send your star rating and accuracy to others.

Create Music

Create Your Own Music is a built-in composition tool that lets you create original songs right in the app! It's like having a mini recording studio in your pocket.

How it works:

  1. Tap keys on the piano to compose your melody. You can also experiment with different input modes like Chords or Draw Pad.
  2. Adjust the tempo and time signature to get the rhythm you want.
  3. Preview your composition to hear how it sounds.
  4. Name your song, pick a cover image, and save it to your library or share it!
The feature is free to use, so you can start creating music anytime. Whether you're a beginner playing around with notes or an experienced player crafting melodies, it's a fun way to bring your ideas to life.

Creating a song is easy and fun! Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Open Create Your Own Music from the main menu.
  2. Start playing notes on the piano keyboard. Just tap the keys to build your melody. You can also try different input modes if available, like Chords mode for chord progressions.
  3. Set the tempo to control how fast or slow your piece plays. The default is 120 BPM, but you can adjust it to whatever feels right.
  4. Preview your work by tapping the play button to hear what you've composed so far.
  5. Once you're happy with your melody (at least 3 seconds long), you have two options: Share — Share your piano composition as-is.
  6. Name your song and choose a cover image from the presets (or upload your own).
  7. Save and share!
Your compositions can be up to 10 minutes long, and there's no limit on how many songs you can create. All your songs are saved in your library so you can listen to them anytime.

Absolutely! Sharing your creations is one of the best parts.

How to share:

  1. After composing your song, you'll be prompted to name it and choose a cover image.
2. Tap Share to open the sharing options.
  3. Send your song via Messages, Email, AirDrop, WhatsApp, or any other app that supports audio sharing.

Your songs are exported as M4A audio files, which are high-quality and play on virtually any device or music player.

Your Song Library

All your compositions are saved automatically to your in-app library. You can go back and listen to any of your past creations at any time. If you used the AI Enhance feature, both generated variations are saved — so you can always revisit the one you didn't pick the first time.

There's no limit on how many songs you can create and save, so let your creativity flow!

Instruments

Piano Aura comes with a variety of instruments so you can explore different sounds!

You'll find a selection of instruments ranging from classic piano sounds (like the Grand Piano) to other keyboard-based instruments. Each instrument has its own unique tone, sustain, and character.

Some instruments are available to everyone for free, while others are exclusive to Premium subscribers. You can browse the full list by opening the Instruments menu — locked instruments will be clearly marked so you know which ones come with a subscription.

We're always working on adding new instruments, so keep an eye out for updates!

Some instruments in the app are exclusive to Premium subscribers. You'll recognize them by the lock icon next to their name in the Instruments menu.

The free instruments give you a great starting point, including the classic Grand Piano sound. Premium instruments offer additional variety and unique tones for players who want to explore more.

To unlock all instruments, you can subscribe to Premium. Just tap on any locked instrument and you'll be shown the subscription options, or you can go to Settings and tap Go Premium.

Once you're subscribed, every instrument in the catalog becomes available instantly!

Switching instruments is quick and easy!

  1. Look for the Instruments menu on the main piano screen.
  2. Tap it to open the list of available instruments.
  3. Browse through the options and tap the one you want to play.

The instrument switches instantly — you'll hear the new sound right away the next time you tap a key. Your choice is saved automatically, so the app will remember your selected instrument the next time you open it.

If you see a lock icon on an instrument, that means it's a Premium instrument. You'll need an active subscription to use it. Tapping a locked instrument will show you the subscription options.

Metronome

A metronome is a tool that keeps a steady beat to help you play in time. Think of it as your personal rhythm coach!

It produces a regular clicking sound at whatever tempo (speed) you set. This helps you:

  • Stay on beat while playing a piece
  • Practice at a slow tempo and gradually speed up as you improve
  • Develop a sense of rhythm over time

Professional musicians use metronomes all the time during practice, and having one built right into the app means you don't need a separate device. Whether you're learning your first song or polishing a complex piece, the metronome is a great companion.

Getting started with the metronome is easy!

  1. Find the Metronome button on the piano screen.
  2. Tap it to turn the metronome on — you'll hear a steady click and see the button animate with each beat.
  3. Tap it again to turn it off.

When the metronome is on, the button visually shows the beat — it fills and flips with each click so you can follow along even if the volume is low.

The metronome starts with a default tempo of 110 BPM (beats per minute) in 4/4 time, which is a comfortable, moderate speed for most pieces. You can customize the tempo, time signature, and volume in the metronome settings.

You can also choose whether the metronome plays during recording, so it can guide you while you capture your performance.

The metronome is fully customizable! Here's what you can adjust:

Tempo (BPM)
Set the speed of the metronome in beats per minute. The default is 110 BPM. Slow it down for practice or crank it up for faster pieces.

Time Signature
Choose from a wide range of time signatures to match the piece you're playing. Options include common signatures like 4/4, 3/4, and 6/8, as well as less common ones like 5/4, 7/8, and more. The default is 4/4, which works for most pop, rock, and classical music.

Volume
Adjust how loud the metronome clicks are, so they don't overpower your playing.

Play While Recording
Toggle whether the metronome continues clicking while you're recording. This is great for keeping time during a recording session — don't worry, the metronome clicks won't be included in your exported audio.

You can access all these settings by tapping the metronome settings icon next to the metronome button.

Recording

Recording your piano performance is simple!

  1. Look for the Record button on the main piano screen.
  2. Tap it to start — you'll see a short countdown (3, 2, 1) before recording begins, so you have time to get ready.
  3. Play your piece on the keyboard. You'll see a visual indicator showing that recording is in progress.
  4. When you're done, tap the Stop button.
  5. You'll be asked to save or discard your recording. If you save it, you can give it a custom name.

Your recording will appear in the My Recordings list, where you can play it back, rename it, share it, or delete it at any time.

Good to know:
Each recording can be up to 30 minutes long.
If you have the metronome enabled, you can choose whether it plays during recording (check the metronome settings).
Recordings are saved on your device, so they'll be there whenever you come back.

Yes! You can export and share your recordings as M4A audio files.

Here's how:

  1. Go to your My Recordings list.
  2. Select the recording you want to share.
  3. Tap the Share option.
  4. Choose how you'd like to share it — you can send it via Email, WhatsApp, Messages, AirDrop, or any other sharing option available on your device.
The exported file is a high-quality audio file that can be played on pretty much any device or music player. So feel free to share your performances with friends and family!

You can save up to 99 recordings on your device. Each recording can be up to 30 minutes long.

If you've reached the 99-recording limit, you'll need to delete some older recordings before you can create new ones. You can do this from the My Recordings list — just select a recording and delete it.

Your recordings are sorted with the newest ones at the top, making it easy to find your latest performances. If you want to keep a recording permanently, don't forget you can always export it as an M4A file and save it elsewhere before deleting it from the app.

Subscription

Subscribing to Premium is quick and gives you access to all instruments and the full Play Along song catalog!

There are a few ways to subscribe:

  1. From Settings — Open Settings and tap Go Premium. You'll see the available subscription plans.
  2. From a locked instrument — Tap any locked instrument in the Instruments menu, and you'll be shown the subscription options.
  3. From Play Along — When you try to play a locked song, you'll see an option to subscribe.

Available plans:

  • Weekly — Great if you want to try Premium without a long commitment. A free trial may be available for first-time subscribers!
  • Yearly — The best value if you plan to keep playing long-term.
All subscriptions are handled through the App Store, so your payment is processed securely by Apple. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time through your device's Settings.

Yes! If you're a first-time subscriber, you may be eligible for a free trial of the Weekly subscription plan.

The free trial lets you experience everything Premium has to offer — all instruments, the full Play Along song catalog, and an ad-free experience — before you're charged anything.

When you go to subscribe (via Settings > Go Premium or by tapping a locked feature), the app will show you if a free trial is available for your account. If it is, you'll see the trial offer clearly displayed on the subscription screen.

Good to know:
The free trial is available once per Apple ID. If you've had a trial before, it won't be offered again.
You can cancel anytime during the trial through your device's Settings > [Your Name] > Subscriptions — if you cancel before the trial ends, you won't be charged.
Trial availability is determined by the App Store, so the exact terms may vary.

You can cancel your subscription at any time through your device's settings. Since subscriptions are managed by Apple, here's how to do it:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top (your Apple ID).
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Find the Piano Aura subscription in the list and tap it.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Your Premium access will continue until the end of your current billing period. After that, your account will revert to the free version.

If you don't see the subscription listed, make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to subscribe. You can also manage subscriptions through the App Store app by tapping your profile icon, then tapping Subscriptions.

We'd love to have you back anytime — you can always resubscribe later!

If you've previously subscribed to Premium (maybe on a different device, or after reinstalling the app), you can restore your purchases to get your Premium access back.

Here's how:

  1. Open the app and go to Settings.
  2. Look for the Restore Purchases button in the subscription section.
  3. Tap it and wait a moment while the app checks with the App Store.

If your subscription is still active, your Premium access will be restored right away — including all instruments and the full Play Along catalog.

Good to know:
Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used for the original purchase.
You'll need an internet connection for the restore to work.
If the restore doesn't find an active subscription, your subscription may have expired. You can check your status in your device's Settings > [Your Name] > Subscriptions.

The easiest way to remove ads is by subscribing to Premium!

With a Premium subscription, you get an ad-free experience across the entire app — no more watching videos to unlock songs in Play Along or any other interruptions.

To subscribe, go to Settings > Go Premium and choose the plan that works best for you (Weekly or Yearly).

If you've already subscribed but still see ads, check out "I'm still seeing ads after subscribing" for troubleshooting steps.

Sorry about that! This can sometimes happen, but it's usually easy to fix.

Try these steps:

  1. Restore your purchases — Go to Settings and tap Restore Purchases. This refreshes your subscription status with the App Store and should resolve the issue.
  2. Check your internet connection — The app needs to verify your subscription with Apple's servers, so make sure you're connected to the internet.
  3. Restart the app — Close the app completely and reopen it. Sometimes a fresh start is all it takes.
  4. Check your subscription status — Go to your device's Settings > [Your Name] > Subscriptions and make sure your Piano Aura subscription is active and hasn't expired.
If none of these steps work, please contact our support team at support@impalastudios.com — we'll get it sorted out for you!

Sustain Pedal

The sustain pedal is one of the most important features on a real piano, and it's built right into the app!

On a real piano, the sustain pedal (also called the damper pedal) is the rightmost foot pedal. When you press it, the notes you play keep ringing out even after you lift your fingers off the keys. This creates a richer, fuller sound where notes blend together beautifully.

In Piano Aura, the sustain pedal works the same way — when it's turned on, the notes you play will continue to ring and gradually fade out instead of stopping the moment you lift your finger. It's especially nice for playing chords, slow melodies, and classical pieces where you want that warm, flowing sound.

Using the sustain pedal in the app is as easy as tapping a button!

  1. Look for the Sustain pedal button on the piano screen.
  2. Tap it once to turn sustain on — the button will light up to show it's active.
  3. Now play some notes — you'll notice they keep ringing even after you lift your finger.
  4. Tap it again to turn sustain off — notes will stop as soon as you release the key.

The sustain pedal works with all instruments in the app, though the effect may sound slightly different depending on which instrument you have selected (just like on real instruments!).

Tip: Try playing a chord with sustain on, then play a melody over it. The chord will keep ringing in the background while you add notes on top — it sounds beautiful!
